Scoil Mhuire Glenties
Ethos
Scoil Mhuire is a Catholic ethos school under the Patronage of Father Gerard Cunningham in the Parish of Iniskeel. Our Bishop is Bishop Alan McGuckian of the Raphoe Diocese. Our children are taught from the "Grow in Love" and "Alive-O!" religious programmes, and are prepared for the Sacraments of Communion, Reconciliation and Confirmation. We celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas through song and nativiy. We remember Christ's teachings on feast days and rejoice in his gifts at school assembly. We pray at the start of our working day and as the school day ends. We respect and recognise other faiths whilst practising our own.

Meet our hard working, dedicated Wellbeing/ Active School Committee
We are currently working towards our first Active School Flag!!
Throughout the school year of '25/'26 we will be engaging in various challenges and activities to bring more movement into our school day.

These are the steps we are taking to earn our Active School Flag:
1. Add Active Movement Breaks to the school day
Skip Around the World Challenge!!
Our first whole school challenge was the "Skip Around the World Challenge. For 3 weeks in October every class did 10 minutes of skipping each day in an attempt to skip around the world! Each skip = 1KM.

Our school worked together to complete the challenge, with a total of 312,180 skips!!
Croke Park Movement Breaks Challenge
For 4 weeks in January we completed the Croke Park Active Breaks challenge. Each day we watched a video filmed around the grounds of Croke Park. We learned an interesting fact about our National Stadium followed by 5 minutes of movement. It was so much fun, and very interesting!

We are aiming to make active movement breaks a regular part of our school day!

2. Create a more Active Playground
Our next challenge is to create a more active playground. We are very lucky to have lots of space to play football, basketball and tag games. We also have a gym, a rock wall, a gazebo and a fairy fort!! But we felt we could add even more activity to our yard by adding some extra equipment. Our Committee got together and came up with some ideas. They then created a dotmocracy where every student in the school got to vote for their favourite 4 suggestions.

Thanks to our wonderful parents association who ran a few fund raisers, we were able to buy lots of fun games and equipment for our yard. With lots more yet to come!
The votes were counted and so it was time to go shopping! For Skipping ropes, hoolahoops, chalk, bubbles, dart boards, golf sets, target games, construction toys, tag games, tennis sets, jenga blocks, pogo balls and lots more!!

3. Focus on one of the strands of the PE Curriculum
Our staff decided to focus on the Athletics strand of the P.E. Curriculum this year. The athletic skills of running, jumping and throwing are so important for our physical development, and play an important role in all sports.
For 6 weeks, every class practised the following Sportshall Athletics events:
1.Standing long jump
2.Standing triple jump
3.Vertical jump
4.Speed bounce
5.Javelin
6.Chest push
7.Relay running.

Then it was time to put our hard work to the test!! We took 4 teams of athletes to the regional Primary schools sportshall competition, run by Donegal Sports Partnership in the Abbey Vocational School. Our teams put in excellent performances! Both 3rd/4th class boys and girls teams finished in 1st place to earn a place at the county finals! Our 5th/6th class teams both finished in 2nd place, with the boys missing out on a place in the final by just 1 point! It was a proud day for Scoil Mhuire and a very enjoyable one too!!
